Faux-hawks are great. I kinda have one. Where a mohawk would typically be is about 4 inches, but my sides are a bit more than shoulder length. Which brings me back to my question. Is there anything I can do besides spike it that will give it a bit of a rocker look? Also, I'm inept with hair, so basic stuff like flat irons, ponytail holders, and bobby pins.
Thanks a ton in advance! And If you want a pic of my head, let me know!

A pomp is super-easy and you can rock that right out...
It was my go-to style for many occasions until recently (dread head now) cuz I could dress it up, or punk it out.
Take the front section of your hair (a bit more than bangs) and tease it; pull towards the back, leaving a fair bit of volume, and comb the top layers smooth. Pin or clip in place behind the pomp. Done.
Looks great with hair down, or up in a pony tail too.

i've been thinking about lightening my hair so i could dye it easier later, but i'm not sure it'll look good light for the time before i dye it. i mean, my hair was blonde when i was little, so i'm guessing it wouldn't look too horrible, but i'm still unsure. so i decided to ask for some other opinions.
here's me and my hair:
also, i mean, i like my hair color, i just wanna mix it up for a bit, and i'm worried if i lighten it it'll take too long to grow out.

i'm sure you could lighten yor hair to a medium blonde without looking odd or even too unnatural. but if you're not sure yet, you should try out doing some blonde higlights. i'm sure those would look great on you. and if you feel you need something more daring you could dye the highlights. red, for example would look good on you, i think.

First, I can only stress that if your parents do not want you to bleach your hair, doing it behind their backs will only tick them off. I know from experience.
But, if you insist on doing it, you might as well do it right.
You could buy a bleach kit from the drug store, and follow those directions to a tee. Or, go to your local Sally's (or equivalent beauty supply store) and pick up some powder bleach and developer (I prefer cream) There are many options, so you might ask a sales associate for help. It will depend on what colour your hair is naturally, and if you have chemically treated your hair prior to this.
I have dark reddish-brown hair naturally, and I use a 30 or 40 volume developer with Quickblue bleaching powder. It has toner built in, which helps clear any brassy or reddish tones in your hair making it more blonde.
Since you have never bleached your hair before, I'd stick to 20 or 30 volume. NO HIGHER unless you know what you are doing.
Mix the two together in a PLASTIC container, and apply evenly to your hair from tips to roots, ensuring even coverage, and try not to get any on your scalp.
An old margarine container will work, but if you plan on doing your own hair more invest in a mixing bowl from Sally's as well. And some tint brushes for application. And some gloves to protect your hands.
DO NOT USE ANYTHING METAL IN YOUR HAIR. This means no clips, no tinfoil, nothing. It can affect how the bleach works, and again, with no experience, you don't want to mess it up, your hair could get pretty bad.
I usually cover my head with plastic at this point. Saran wrap or an old shopping bag. The plastic will hold your body heat in, as well as the heat created by the chemical process of lightening your hair. Check your hair after about 10 minutes by wiping a small amount off a test patch. The lightest you will want to go is the shade of the inside of a banana (and that is very light indeed) Do not let it sit on your head for more than about 20-30 minutes. A half hour is a very long time to process. I'd say 15 max, in reality. This is not an oxidizing process, but a heat process, which can damamge your hair very badly if done incorrectly, or left on too long.
Take the plastic off when your desired lightness is acheived and rinse well. I usually do a shampoo as well, just to make sure I've gotten it all out. Then use a REALLY GOOD conditioner and allow that to sit on your head for a good 5 minutes or so before rinsing.
When you bleach your hair, you are chemically stripping the natural pigments, which also gets rid of all your natural oils. Left too long, your hair may become straw-like and break easily, or even mushy and simply fall out. A good conditioner can help restore some of the things you have stripped. It's not a fix-all though.
After one round of bleach, do not chemically process your hair again for at least a week (no second bleaching to further lighten, no adding chemial-based colours {SFX and the like are not chemical based, so they are okay}, no perms)
If you must further lighten your hair, you will have to wait at least a week for those natural oils to build back up.
Again, I would like to stress that this could really tick the 'rents off, and that if you don't know what you are doing, ask for help. The sales associates at Sally's should be happy to explain things to you. Even ask a friend to help with the application.
Best bet, though? Go to a salon and have them do it for you. Those women (and men) are trained professionals and DO know what they are doing, and how things will affect your hair. Then go home and add your fun colours... My stylist always added my colour free of charge, since I brought it in with me, but I haven't seen her in about a year...
Good luck, whatever you do with your hair

thanks. i've dyed my hair red before (well, crimson) and i'm probably going to go for something in the red/auburn family when i dye it. sometimes i get natural blonde highlights when i'm out in the sun a lot, but it's only the beginning of summer, and i'm impatient.
