I have frizzy thick, wavy black hair that is layered right now (the longest layer hits above chest level) and I really want to do something different with it, but last time I went shorter than shoulder length I looked like a little kid. Does any one have any tips/suggestions for me? I kind of want to color it, but I'm not sure if it would suit me...

Liberry Booked - have you attempted long, side-swept bangs? They can be a drastic change, without actually changing much, and I think they would really suit your face.
That, and highlights are a great way to try out colour. If you're more naturally-inclined, you could pull off some nice carmel highlights or face-framing chunks; perhaps even a deep red. For a more fun and daring colour, blue would look great with your hair's natural tones, and a bright red would also be great, or even purple...

Long sideswept bangs? Not too sure what you mean (do you think you could post a pic?)...not the same as side bangs right? The kind that go diagonally across your forehead? And would I have to get the highlights professionally done (I doubt my parents would be willing to pay that much to get my hair highlighted)?

yeah, pretty much side bangs. Cut centered, long with some layering, but then swept across the forehead...
Here's some links to a few for reference:
http://img2.timeinc.net/instyle/images/2007/galleries/070507_olsen_400X400.jpg A bit shorter, lots of movement
http://www.hairstyles-hairstyle.com/j/long-hairstyle.jpg Longer, and choppy

I think either could suit you well...About cheek-bone length?
And you could have them done professionally, or go and purchase the supplies and do them yourself (or get a friend to help) Just make sure that you do your research before you jump into chemically treating your hair...Don't be afraid to ask questions about what you want to know; Here, or at your beauty supply store. Even at a good salon, some of them will offer advice.
