Aerosol hairspray + backcombing. Doesn't hurt to straighten your hair first, if you've got a flatiron. Usually my routine was straighten all the hair when its down, then spray lightly with aerosol spray to build up a little texture, backcomb at the root to help the hair stand up straight out from the head. Then spray upward with the aerosol hairspray, backcombing lightly on the sides, then clamp down on the hawk with the straightener to get it nice and flat.

If you know anyone in hair school, have them razor your hair, especially on your ends, and on the sides. Less weight will help your hawk battle gravity. For funsies, this is what mine looked like:
