batik dandelion dress
«
on:
April 10, 2007 10:35:46 AM »
i made this completely from scratch- the dress is made from hand dyed rayon.
its had 3 baths- turquoise>light green > orange (which turned it all brown)
the front hem is shorter than the back- im in so much love with this dress- i couldnt bear to part with it.
its rare i keep things for myself- but i couldnt let this one go
my feet dont mind the snow....

sooo pretty and perfect for warmer weather (if it ever arrives
)!
Do you have a
huge
pot for boiling out? Whenever I try to iron out pieces like this, the wax goes to unwaxed areas and looks kinda yucky
. I might need to buy a big cheap pot & try boiling.

thanks
i just use a giant lobster pot to boil it out- i never iron.
my rule of thumb is at least 3 minutes in boiling water- then immediately into a HOT washload with a heap of soap. the wax boils pretty good out of the rayon i think....
and yep- i used a tjanting. paintbrush too.

I'm in love with your dress, it's amazing! It really makes me want to try wax batik.
When you dye your fabric do you have a really big bucket to put it in? It looks very even and I always manage to get spots with more/less colour when I dye larger pieces of fabric

Forgive me, as I'm an extreme beginner to dyeing, but how would you go about this? Dye the whole thing turquoise, wax the parts you wanted to stay turquoise, dye it green, wax the parts you want to stay green, then do it in orange? DD and I are embarking on our first dyeing attempts this weekend, hopefully, and this looks beautiful! The original plan was to just tie dye, or paint it with a paint brush (have paintstiks and dyna flow (however it's spelled), but this looks really great! Of course, I'd also have to find some wax....

the dress i made from white rayon---
i sewed it and then dunked it in turq dye... i dyed a seperate piece to color the waist band to sew on later...
drew in the parts i wanted to stay turquoise- then a dip in bright green..dry ... more waxing... the final bath was orange- which made it come out a weird browny shade i like a lot.
then i boiled it- added the turquoise bias tape and bam.
rayons a pain to sew sometimes- it tears up really easy and water weakens the fibers....
