My friend Jordan is having me teach him to sew, so I raided my stash and the craft store for the essential supplies!

Here's what I put together:

It includes:
1.  A bunch of scrap fabric that I cut into 5x5 squares (his first project is going to be a simple small quilt)
2.  Thread (obviously necessary!)
3. His very own tomato/strawberry pincushion with pins!  (these are very symbolic/essential for me... )
4. A needle threader with Julius Caesar on it (ditto to the tomatoberry)
5. Needles of different sizes
6. A few stray fat quarters that were on sale
7. Measuring tape

Can anyone think of other things I should stick in?  He's going to be sewing by hand for now, so no machine supplies aren't necessary.  What do YOU always need when you sew?

music to sew by...  Wink

how about a small ruler, like a 6" one (sometimes easier to measure with than a tape, like for hems and stuff)

marking pencil or chalk

This isn't quite as essential, but I always feel strongly about the boxes in which I keep my sewing supplies.  A tin or box with just enough room to fit essentials without them rolling around and getting tangled in eachother is nice to have.

I think it is really sweet of you to put together such a nice kit!  He is a lucky boy.  I used to fix fallen off buttons for all my guy friends, but I always made them sit through a 'this is how you sew on a button' lecture first (then took pity and just did it myself Wink LOL!)  I agree with everybody, I can't live without my mini scissors (though a seam ripper works too)- and I love a cookie tin for supplies.
