I don't get their reaction- it's not like the necklaces are horribly grotesque or anything... in fact they're really pretty and would sell well on etsy.

I hate when people have reactions like that to stuff I make, though... it realy lowers my confidence

I think they are great! You could try hanging them off ribbon instead of chain, to match with the fabric theme and nature motifs. I think a few strands of thin ribbon in colours to match the pendants would be cool
