i am spending the summer up at yale.  are there any good craft stores within the new haven area?  general crafting, fabric, yarn, beads-- all are fine.  The store must be walking distance from the freshman dorms (i dont have a car)

also, if you know any non craft stores, just places i can walk to buy supplies that would be great..

im just trying to get a feel for the crafty situation!

There's a yarn store within walking distance:

Yarn, LLC
http://www.yarnllc.com
55 Whitney Avenue (near Audubon)
New Haven, CT 06510
(203) 776-9276
It's expensive, none of the prices are marked, the staff is inexperienced, they don't have some pretty basic notions, and the entire store is organized by color rather than by fiber. But it's all there is.

And there's a bead store:

Bead Hive II
http://www.thebeadhive.net
71 Audubon Street
New Haven, CT 06510
(203) 776-2323

Also within walking distance:

Hull's Art Supply & Framing
http://www.hullsnewhaven.com
1144 Chapel Street (near York St.)
New Haven, CT 06511
(203) 865-4855
Toll-free (866) 888-4855

For anything else, you'll need to take a bus: http://www.cttransit.com

Michaels Arts & Crafts
http://www.michaels.com
170 Universal Drive
North Haven, CT 06473
(203) 985-0302
Prices are up to 20% higher than the Michaels in Milford, since there's no competition.

Michaels Arts & Crafts
http://www.michaels.com
79 Turnpike Square
Milford CT 06460-2758
(203) 877-9677

A.C. Moore
http://acmoore.com
Christmas Tree Plaza
210 A Indian River Road
Orange, CT 06477
(203) 795-9450

Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts
http://www.joann.com
Hamden Mart (shopping plaza)
2300 Dixwell Avenue
Hamden, CT 06514-2108
(203) 287-0311

Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts
http://www.joann.com
Milford Plaza
177 Cherry Street
Milford, CT 06460-3431
(203) 877-5297

PS. There's a Stitch 'n Bitch within walking distance Wednesdays from 7 to at least 9 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to at least 3 p.m.: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SnB_NewHaven or http://knitting.meetup.com/909

You're welcome. I was worried that I might have overlooked some great crafty places so I asked everyone at Sunday's S'nB. Nope, that's all there is in walking distance. Everyone agreed -- you're better off ordering online.

PS. If you ever get a chance to borrow a car, WEBS is only an hour & a half away and so worth the drive: http://yarn.com/s/storelocator.html.
