Okay, I didn't know where this would go... so I'll put a link in designer homage too. I've seen this really cute little dress on celebs such as Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Rachel Bilson, Jessica Simpson, and some girl from Charmed (but I don't watch it so I don't know her name...) Any who, I loved it so much, and couldn't afford the dress, plus it's from the US and I'm from the UK, so shipping and customs duty was an issue too...
SOOOOOO I made my own. with the help of other craftsters:
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=160245.msg1614178#msg1614178
(also use the link to see different pics of the original dress)... which is:
Made out of 3 T's:
I cut them up, stitched them back together... and this is what I got:
the cat wanted to be in this one!
side
front
back
Thanks for ALL the help I got with putting it together... without it this would have taken me months!! lol.
Comments? crit? please let me know what you think.
Thanks
Lou xx
TUTE TIME
I've moved this over from page 3 for easier viewing:
Okay, if there's anything you don't understand.. please say, I haven't read over this.. andI'm very tired... zzzZZZZ
1:
OOOOOOOOOOOOkay... so start off by getting yourself 3 large Tshirts. (I used 2 that fitted me fine and one large one and found myself struggling for fabric towards the end...it can still be done, but looking back now I'd have used large tees). Also, depending on how many colours you want in your dress, you may need more!
2:
The original dress measures 28 inches in length, and the sections are different sizes.. So this is what I came up with for the measurements.
1: 2.5 inches
2: 3.5 inches
3: 4 inches
4: 5 inches
5: 5 inches
6: 4 inches
7: 4 inches
3:
Next, Find a tshirt that fits reasonably close to your body, and measure the widest part. This is going to be the wifth of all your pieces (minus the skirt part).
4:
Now... you're going to need a front and a back.. The easiest way to do this is to cut a tube from your tshirt, then cut off the remaining seams so you're left with two strips of fabric. Cut these pieces to the measurement you took from your tshirt.. front and back... and don't forget your seam allowances on everything!!
Continue doing this until you have all the pieces for your bodice part.
5:
Stitch all your pieces together in two sections (front and back!), using a stretch stitch, and you should end up with two of these:
Now put the pieces together, right sides facing, and lay that close fitting tee on to it. draw around it so it looks like this:
dont forget to give yourself seam allowance, and sew up the sides. Don't cut the remainder off that you don't need, just incase you need to unpick and make it bigger. leave a couple of inches at the bottom open.
6:
Now onto the skirt. for the first tier, I measured around my lower hips, where the bodice ended... you then half that measurement, and add half of what you're left with, on top. for example, if your measurement started off with 40, you want to half it to get 20, then add on half of 20 (10), which gives you 30.
Cut two of these with seam allowance (back and front).
For the second tier, you do exactly the same, but using the final measurement from the first tier as your starting point. Now multiply it by 1.5, which would give you 45 if your last measurement was 30.
(Sorry if this makes no sense... I'm rubbish with sums!)
(Again, cut two of these)
Now, gather the top part of your second tier, and adjust until it's the same width as your first tier. Pin and stitch to your first tier. Do the same for the back section too.
Then, gather your first tier, and use the bottom of your bodice part to determine how gathered it needs to be. When they measure the same width, again pin and sew your first tier to the bottom of your bodice (right sides facing).
7:
Finally, sew up the rest of the sides. If you want to add a hem then obviously you can, but mine doesn't have one.
And hopefully you should now have a mini tube dress thingy
Please let me know if you use my tutorial, and post links to finished works

Cute! I like yours better than the super-colorful version.
Did you just cut the shirts into strips then rearrange them?
PS your kitty is adooooooooorable.

HAHA lol thanx, she's well lazy though!!
It was a long process... trial and error. I basically decided what length each 'section' was going to be, then I made pattern pieces for them. cut out 'tubes' from the t's, but also cut them at the seams, so I had a front and a back. sewed them all together, so I had a front and a back, then stitched up the sides loosely, put it on inside out and pinned it to fit. then I stitched up the sides almost to the bottom, then attached the skirt.
Hope that made sense..?!

well.. I wanted the first tier of the skirt to be blue, and the second white, to continue with the colour pattern.... but I ran out of Tshirt lengthliness... so I had to make patches.. I prefer it anyway!!

Ooh.. hey, I'm thinking of adding straps... whilst I have my machine out and still have a few scraps left over..
What colour straps would you use.. out of the three Ts... and also, what kinda straps? I'm thinking halter.. so I can wear it with my bikini.. or maybe just plain ones, so they cover my bra straps.. I don't have a halter bra.. hmmm any thoughts on the straps??

Halter straps would look nice. Not sure what color though.
