I know this was on someone's blog or site last year, so I can't take credit, but I can't remember the site.  Sad

My coworker gave me a CD spindle that would have otherwise been tossed.  I spent 80 cents at Michaels to get a strand of 35 lights in blue that were on the clearance rack.

I didn't even cut any of the plastic - there is a little gap between the clear dome and the base but no one will notice it unless the inspect it!

If I create a few more various colors, I'll have some funky wall art and mood lighting!  though it looks a little un-appealing in day light hours (inset).

I've been saving those clear plastic CD spindle covers for a lamp too!  I was thinking of painting the inside around the sides, or mod podging something on (tissue paper), then having a lightbulb stand up in there.  But finding the standing socket fixture has been bringing me down.  I don't really want to trek all the way to Home Depot just for that... oh well.  Great job udandi!

Incredible! Just today I was cleaning my room and thinking, I wonder if there is anything I can do with this empty CD spindle. Then, thinking to myself that I was a crazy pack rat...threw it away, must...resist...the urge...to keep.

Now thanks to your post my CD spindle has been saved from the garbage. It sends its thanks. Fab idea.

If I can't be my own, I'd feel better dead.

Great idea! I'm about to have a free cd case, and I was wondering what to do with it. Thanks!

TIP:

Do not leave them on long... Because I did and like 5 bulbs busted because of the heat inside it and some of the strands of rubber melted together. Just thought I would let you guys know not to leave the house with on because they get REALLY hot.

Cheers

I cut the bottom out of the lid thing, stacked it on another & it is a very crazy garbage can. I am somewhat afraid to make lights-- I have a talent for bursting bulbs.

hmm... to make it more spiffy for the day-time, perhaps you could paint the outside with translucent glass paint or what not. maybe swirls of red and violet. blue lights + red see-though-ness = cool purple light fixture?
