Tutorial: Wallet/Organizer Holder with Pattern

Awesome!  LOVE the color choices. Great job...soo pretty, and functional.  It looks like maybe 2 little pleats on the change pocket for more room??? Perfect idea!

I did my re-make over the weekend and will try and get the pics up today.

It *is* pleats for extra coinage--good eye! My boyfriend was all, "you messed up the zipper part, there's wrinkles in it" and I had to explain to him that it was intentional.

It makes me feel so organized! I love it!

here is my re-do with better measurements so my cards fit in right.

i'm working on a tutorial that i should have up this weekend. perhaps EmilyFlew would also treat us with how to do the pleats on the coin pocket. (man i wish i had seen hers before i did my re-make)

strap side (i was going to cover the elastic with a fabric casing, but i didn't know how that would affect its grip on the wallet)


zipper side (much easier to put the eleastic in the seam with the binding rather the zipper opening)


zipper open (pleats a la EmilyFlew would give this pocket some more room)

wow, that is so nice. i can not even imagine tackling such a project.
please tell me you plan on covering the organizer book cover. it clashes with the coolness and needs something: pictures, paint, fabric, watercolors, anything.

So pretty! Yours look so neat and clean, and not as ginormous as mine.

Here's what I did for my coin pocket. Basically, instead of the outside of the wallet being made of one big square of fabric with a zipper in it, as it looks like yours is, mine is 2 rectangles of fabric joined by a zipper, if that makes sense. Then, it's easy to make the smaller rectangle about an inch wider than the zipper is, and when pinning it to the zipper, pinning some pleats in it.

And it wasn't all that complicated to make--I just cut up pieces of paper and taped them together until it made the shape I wanted with the pockets I wanted, then cut it all apart so each of the pieces of paper was a pattern for a different pocket. Lots of bias tape to cover mistakes, and voila!

  no tutorial done yet. this was the work weekend from hell. wait sewpixie, you work m-f, not weekend.....yes that is part of why it was hell.  can we say about 4 hours of sleep total since Saturday morning? and where am I now? at work till 10 tonight. 

i've got the pics for the tute, just to write it up. i'll try to get it done this week.

approx size (when closed) 7.5"tall x 4.75"wide. made to fit DayTime Pocket size wire-bound planner. i don't know that anyone will need pattern peices for squares, but if i find i can save my Visio stuff out to pdf i'll post links to those too.

The Pattern:

* plus one piece of fabric or clear vinyl for your ID holder. size of ID plus seam allowance to top and bottom.
* plus pre-made or made by you double-fold binding (.5" wide when folded double, 2" wide when unfolded all the way)
* plus .5" wide elastic, a little taller than your wallet.

Note: the right side pocket is slightly more narrow to accomodate the planner.

Putting it Together:

1. Cut Fabric

2. Right side pockets. Take the long left side pocket piece. Fold it accordian style to form a pocket. Where to fold is marked on the pattern and also a zig-zag looking drawing of how it will look from the side. Press folds.

3. Press interfacing onto back of folded pocket piece (interfacing is the same size as the pocket lining piece you have cut out).
4. Put pocket and pocket lining wrong sides together.
5. On the left long edge, place the binding right side down along the edge, matching edges. Unfold the binding and pin in place. Sew along the binding crease, 1/2" from the edge.

6. Refold the binding so it encases the pocket and the lining. Sew near to the folded edge of the binding.

7. REPEAT FOR LEFT SIDE POCKET (left side pocket will have 3 pockets for cards plus ID holder)

8. Zipper Pocket. Use SewPixie zipper pocket tutorial to create a zipper pocket on the outside of your wallet (I put the zipper pocket on the same end where the card pockets are). OR use EmilyFlew's pleated pocket idea for a more expanadable change pocket.

9. Interface the wallet lining. Place it and the outer wallet piece wrong sides together. Place the left pocket at the left edge of the wallet lining, the right pocket at the right edge. Baste in place.

10. Baste the ends of the elastic at the edge, lined up with the zipper. Check and make sure your elastic will hold your wallet closed snugly.


11. Repeat binding steps to bind the wallet together all around the edges. (I bound the top and bottom first, then the sides, folding the binding under at the ends on the short sides, then hand stitching the ends closed).


12. Enjoy!

I'm SO digging this!  There is a Kate Spade wallet-organizer thingie that I've been wanting to ummm..duplicate? and now that I have a tute to head me in the right direction, I might actually start on it.
