OH MY GOSH!!!....I can't believe I'm posting in the knitting section...I'm so excited!...I'm a crocheter but have ALWAYS wanted to learn how to knit and have been stalking the knitting forum for, ummmmm, EVER while just pea green with envy at all the talent here....well, my in-laws were just here for a visit and I begged my MIL to teach me how to knit...and she did....my first requested item was from my 16 year old son...he wanted a Jamaican flag/Rasta scarf....(doesn't EVERYONE do a scarf for their first knitting project???)...Well, this is the combination I came up with...my son loves it....it's all done in knit stitch (the repetition was great practice)....it took me about 4 days...

Yea! I'm a knitter!!!!

That looks great! Knitting is a great hobby, you're going to love it!

When I first looked at the name of the topic- my jaw dropped. I thought "I'm one of you now" was being said in relation to the Rasta scarf instead of knitting.... haha.

Thanks for the encouragement guys!!!

I knit the scarf on circulars....everywhere I read said that knitting vertical stripes was easiest on circulars...it really was easy to handle...when my son first asked me to knit the scarf lengthwise I freaked just imagining the length of the needles I would need to do THAT!... Grin....then I read about circulars...whew!.... Tongue

Congratulations on creating such a successful first project! I used to totally agree with the Yarn Harlot (as a new knitter, you should definitely read the Yarn Harlot's book) that scarves don't make the best first projects, because they go on forever and ever and people don't usually end up with something they like, but yours is the perfect solution! Your son looks like he loves it, it looks great, and you learned all kinds of new skills at once.

If you're still in the knitting mood, you should try a hat next on some circulars. They are super easy and so quick to make!

Thanks!...and I will look up that book!...my son is begging me for a hat to match his scarf, so I guess I'll give it a go!

Thanks again!
