I recently aquired my sisters two ferrets as my Tachi has passed over the rainbow bride and her little brother was very lonely.
Safire has adrenal and I've called my vet and they are willing to work with me on paying for his surgery! *YEAH!*
However his little sister Ruby is deaf. I'm a bit sad for her becasue she doesn't play since she can't hear.  She just wanders around looking for something to do and is very inquisitive. I really would like her to be able to play and enjoy her life. Does anyone on the forum have toy ideas for deaf ferrets?

Edit: Saffire has passed over the rainbow bridge. Ruby is now 4.5 years old and lives by herself. The other ferret she was with was bugging her to play and hurting her without meaning to. He was over enthusiastic with her and about 3 times her size. We now have 4 ferrets and 3 are younger and in the ferret condo (3 storys with full floors for ultimate play space)
And ruby lives in a flat one level cage. She sleeps mostly being older and is still deaf but very sweet. Smiley

Update: Ruby Passed away in her sleep on 1/24/08. She was 4 going on  5 in march.

I've seen balls that you put a treat in so the ferret can work on getting the treat out again, that might work. Balls with different textures might be good for her. I've never had a deaf ferret, so this is all just brain-storming. You can also put treats in the small Kong toys.
We bought a cat toy for our four ferrets that moves and flashes. We can't leave it with them without supervision though because Nigel can flip it and take the wheels off of it in less than a minute.

I'm sorry about Tachi, ferrets just never live long enough.

Hmm... I would try toys to entice her other senses... lights (like forestgreen said) smells and textured tubes and stuff...

My little buddy (Osiris) loves fuzzy, furry materials. If you take a 2 liter coke bottle and cut the bottom off and stretch a big sock over the end and pull it through the bottle and tie a knot in the end on the outside of the top, it makes a nice little diggy tube. Also try catnip... some ferrets go wild over that stuff.

My ferrets absolutely love tubes. I sewed them an octopus (with just 6 legs, so it's rather a sestopus I guess...) made out of several tubes. Since I'm somehow not allowed to post pictures, here's the link to the pic:

we also bought some flexible plastic tubes at the DIY store and put them under the couch (since our living room is completely stuffed with ferret toys we had no other place to put them), they love chasing each other through them, that's so cute.

You can't post an actual pic till you have ten posts. Thanks so much for showing me! That's a great idea and looks like you can wad it up on a corner when not i use? What did you do for the body?
I'm pretty sure I can make it crinkle which will entertain the other two fuzz butts as well.
clever about the tubes under the couch. I'll have t okeep my eyes open next time I'm at Lowes.

I'll have to try catnip! I recently found a grocery store that had some! horray!
And the diggy tube sounds great too. We go through soda like no-body's buisness.

Thanks for the great ideas! Keep them coming as you get them!

I used plain corduroy fabric for the octopus, but fleece will work equally well. Basically I just sewed the tubes (if you got some pairs of old pants you want to get rid off, they'll work as well), cut two round parts for the body and then attached the tubes to the "body" (or head, whatever you might call it). You could insert another layer of fabric and put bin liners in between in order to make it crinkle. And yes, you can wad it up when it's not in use. Well, I got so used to it, I started regarding it as a carpet. I almost miss it when it's in the washer  Wink
greets to the ferrets!

My furrits loooved paper bags...diving in them, making them hop around.  And sorry about Tachi, doll.
Maybe an old cowboy boot from the thrift store with a hole cut out of the toe?  Rikki and Tikki were OBSESSED with my shoes for some ungodly reason.  My friend had a deaf dog, and like Nikki and Forrest said, things that enitice other sense.  Blinky lights, treat balls, texturized items (like for babies).

The shoes are great ideas! I think ruby would love that sort of thing as she's quite curious. We've fallen on some tough times financially and so I haven't been able to get Safire's surgery. I wish there was some sort of free clinic for that sort of thing. Anyway's Thanks so much for the ideas and condolences.
