This is my firstest large mixed media piece that I've done.  I've been making collages for quite awhile, but not on this scale.  It's for a 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle' art show, here in Fort Worth this month.  All of the materials used are from someone else's trash can, scrap bin, or junk drawer, except for the framing (and the paints and glues).

"If only she could fly..."
24"x24"

--Background was another painting (on canvas).  I layered torn  foreign newspapers (from PJMCLNJ), French book pages (from AlteredMommy), dictionary pages (from Phizzychick) and paper towels onto the entire canvas, then glazed in the background color for the tree, grass and sky over that.
--The tree is mostly scraps of fabric, ribbon, and string, (from RecycleMicol and Naelany and Katxena).
Grass is fabric scraps from my sewing trash and RM's.

--Flowers are purple bubble wrap (packing material from a swap) and purple measuring tape (from Alwaysinmyroom).
--Sun is a gold doily with a magazine babie's face, I drew over it and then applied gold glitter glue.
--Sky is textured with pieces of baby blue lace (you really can't see it on the pictures) from my mom's sewing scraps, and the wind/clouds is white tuile, another scrap from RecycleMicol.

--The girl herself.  Book page hat (from Phizzychick) with a metal '3' stencil on it, face is a Mona Lisa magazine pic (from RecycleMicol (RM) ) I drew over it and used sharpies and 3 thick coats of modpodge.  Arms are magazine scraps, dress is red fabric from RM, Legs are selvage edges from old fabric and the shoes are black denim, another RM scrap.  The whole body is glued to the thick cardboard of a taquitos box.  Smiley  Wings are silver and gold mesh Christmas ribbon from RM.  Buttons are from mom's bin (3 different ones).  Red rick rack (on the bottom of her dress to cover her 'leg' brads) from my sewing scraps.

--She hangs (arms and feet) from thin pieces of wire, on cut pieces of old paint sticks.  The frame is made from wooden 12" rulers, painted black.

--Her body is anchored on her dress to the canvas, but the arms, legs, head, and feet are attached with brads, so they can move.  They are anchored to the top piece by wire, like a Marionette.

Anyhow, I know the pics aren't great and you can't really see the color, but thanks for viewing (and commenting) as well as triple thanks to those of you who sent me some good junk!  Hopefully it will sell at the gallery night (March 31st) or I'll at least get some new customers for my business.  I doubt I'll be working like this much though, my kitchen has been a disaster all week with all the scraps lying about!  Tongue

The bestest part is that I only bought ONE thing, the rulers....everythin g else was just lying around the house.  The rulers cost me $2.00 (for 2 packs of 4 rulers at my $1 store).

Oh, yea! Glad you liked her.  I wanted to use some scraps from you, but they were TOO pretty to cut up!  Tongue I couldn't do it.  I'm so bad like that, give me a nice full size sheet of paper and I will HOARD it, but give me a scrap and I'll instantly use it!  (Weird packrat girl).  Tongue
Thanks!

Hi, OY!  That is awesome!

I'm in Fort Worth, too.  Where will the exhibit be?
It's at the Firehouse Art Gallery, the exhibit runs from March 24th-April 29th.  It's an Earth Day celebration!  Sunday April 22nd is the big 'Earth Day Festivities' day, with outdoor sales and tables from 2pm-6pm.  I'm sure the gallery website can tell you more.

I'd love it for anyone who could to see her in person, my camera is shoddy, and you can see all the foreign wording, texture from the fabrics and 3-d-ness of the lace and toile that stick out.  I'm proud of her!

Any tips on pricing?  I know what I want to put (and the number of hours that went into it!) but will always take opinions!  Smiley

Oh, I'm familiar with Firehouse.  I'm actually moving (from the eastside to the TCU area) during that timeframe, but I'll try to get over there to see it.

It really is a beautiful piece.  Smiley

I would so love to see that in person!!!  I want to touch it.

I did a search on pricing for you but came up with nada. Sorry

As if the art wasn't amazing enough, I'm in  Shocked that you remember where all your scraps came from.

ha ha --Hell must be freezing over if OY is refusing scraps!! ha ha

I will keep your box of scraps under my crafting table for the time when you need them (which, at the rate you produce pieces, won't be long!) wow

I hate pricing, also--if you go too cheap, people don't seem to value it as much but if you go too expensive, it won't sell!  Are there others that have exhibited before?  Can they tell you what kind of crowd will be coming?  Hopefully, it will be a  more urban, affluent group that would give the piece its rightful place in their home!!!

Thanks everyone! I delivered her to the gallery today for the installation, the owner really liked it!  She is going to recommend my work to another gallery, thinking my style will mesh better there for a show.  I'm stoked!

My piece blended well with the others in the gallery for the exhibit, most of those were more scuptural.  It fit it, but also stood out; probably because I LOVE color so much.

I also did settle on a price, I went with my gut on this one....I knew what I probably could get (or should), but went with a lower value, of what I think it could actually sell for.  I certainly would prefer the cash to another piece of art laying around the house!  Smiley
Sell it now, and I won't have to bring it home to store it.  Tongue

I'll keep you guys posted if it sells!  Thanks for the support.

Exhibit is open March 31st -April 22nd, and there is a big Earth day celebration there that day, with craft booths and people selling stuff, come and check it out if you are local!

That's great, OY!  Will Firehouse be asking that pieces be left until the end of the exhibit if they are sold?  I'm moving opening weekend and I don't want to miss seeing this piece in person.  Smiley

I would assume that is the case, that the pieces will be up March 24-April 22nd...They don't want to have to rearrange if they get sold!  Smiley

I'm working on 2 more pieces today....enjoying it.  They won't be as complicated as the last one though....but still 'trashy'.  Smiley

Thanks!  I'm almost finished with the 2 pieces I did today, they are primarily cancelled postage stamps, magazine pics (used with the packing tape transfer method), fabric scraps, maps, and phonebook pages and paper doilies....sounds complicated, but I dig them.  Will try to take some pics tomorrow for you gals!  Smiley  (After work)

Here I am with it in the Gallery!  The owner said it had gotten lots of comments and compliments, so that is promising....I'm hoping she sells!  (cause I need the $) but I will miss her, for sure!

The color is actually brighter than the photo.

Something funny: when I was taking the picture, a few other artists were commenting how I used 'MY' face as the marionette girls...but I didn't! It's the Mona Lisa!  They said I really look like her, that maybe I was the model for the painting in another life, how funny is that???
