This is a regular commercial journal that I found really cheap. I took an old white sheet, cut it up and colored it using paints and fabric crayons, embroidered a flower and my daughter's name on it, and centered it on the front cover using heavy duty adhesive tape. It was a fun, quick project.

It really is lovely. I have neice who would love this. Such a great idea for decorating your own fabric. Will have to try it.

It is so sweet, must've been a fair amount of work though!

Not as much work as you think ... I just put some watercolor washes on the fabric, use Pentel Fabric Dye sticks to do the reliefs, and the embroidery was fairly simple.

i love the embroidery and dyed fabric!  looks like something you'd see in the magazine cloth, paper, scissors....i love when people combine embroidery or sewing with paper projects, it just adds a really nice hand made touch to it, you've inspired me to try and learn some simple embroidery, was it difficult?  my sewing skills are pretty minimal....

Cloth Paper Scissors is my fav magazine ... Quilting ARts is my next fav (same publisher)!

Some embroidery stitches are kind of complicated, but you can do some awesome work with just a few stitches. For this piece all I used was the blanket stitch (EASY) and a whipped backstitch (EASY). Those two and the chain stitch are mostly what I use. Here are links for directions from a Crazy Quilt site:
