If it was shipped with regular postal service, then there really is no such thing as a tracking number.  I don't know exactly how they have the information about the post office, but the closest the USPS gets to a tracking number is the Delivery Confirmation numbers we use here for tracking swaps.  I know things may work differently in New York as far as being able to pick up packages, but what I DO know is the same across the country is that all mail for certain zip codes is routed to certain post offices.  Typically, even if I don't get or lose the attempted delivery slip I can still go into the post office that handles the mail for my zip code, whether it's my home or office address (too which I to sometimes have things delivered) and tell them my name and that they should ahve a package for me, and they are to go to the place they set aside for attempted delivery mail and look for it.  Obviously, it's easier to find if they have a slip, but just having a name is usually enough.  Calling the post office at large is not going to be very helpful to you.  You really need to just figure out which post office handles the delivery zip code, go down there and explain your problem.  The post office that handles your mail should not need any "tracking number' and may not know what to do with one if they had it, since the USPS doesn't USE tracking numbers per se.

Hopefully, all this is just water under the bridge and they will attempt to deliver it again.

Actually, that's not true.  USPS does offer better tracking for more expensive services like express mail, and you can pay for real location-to-location tracking (separate from DC).

i have a positive update to share!  i still haven't received my package from phildar, but they were really good about emailing me about every other day to see if i had received the package yet...they've just resent it...i think it didn't get here because of how they wrote the address (european style) and that they wrote brooklyn instead of new york, ny (i'm not sure how that mix up happened other than that they assumed i lived in the same city as the shipping address)...i got an email from them today that gave me the way they were shipping the package to me along with (drum roll please) a tracking number!  hopefully i'll get it before i'm near phildar stores so i can peruse the copy and figure out if i want to buy yarn there while i'm on vacation...
