So there is a huge sale going on at www.knithappens.net and I found some great chunky cotton yarn that I love and I want to knit up a blanket for my older son in some funky patchworky sort of pattern, but i need a pattern or some guidance for how much yarn i should get. i'm thinking a blanket that has stripes going this way, then that way, then cable here and cable there in mostly natural with accents of blue/orange/green/purple.

This may seem too generic, but www.knittingpatterncentral.com has a wonderful collection of online knitting patterns, including blankets.

PS-thanks for the tip on knit happens!
