I want to make one for DH and his laptop, and for occasional use my me and my crafts (I usually take over the whole table).  I don't have any mismatched bins and lids right now (shocking), but do you think the plastic is a bad idea for a warm laptop?  I doubt it will melt, but warm plastic can't be a good idea.  I found some lovely bamboo cutting boards at TJ Maxx, but they're heavy.

Hmmm...thinking back to my own laptop, I don't think it would do any harm, but I would be bothered by the flexibility of the lid.  Masonite would be a good substitute... Art stores have 'sketch boards' that are essentially giant clip boards, and if you could find one of those on-the-cheap, it'd probably be perfect....

Anyone else with ideas?

For years I've used a lap desk, both to work on and (probably more often) for eating in front of the TV.  The top is, I think, masonite with a thin laminate on top, the bottom stuffed with something pellet-y rather than pillow-type stuffing.  The fabric is the best part: a silly monkey print, stained from all its use but still in good condition.  And while I don't plan to replace it, you have definitely inspired me to be on the lookout for an orphaned lid with which to make a new one.  Then maybe I'll see if the facbric of old one can be cleaned....
