My mum is getting married on the 12th of may and since i have quite some time left and not much money, I decided I would make my own dress. A good idea since I'm quite good and have experience in making formal dresses. But what I want might send my mum ino cardiac arrest. I've never really been into color so I want to make an all-black dress. What I was thinking was this
But with the red parts being black lace. Would this be to funeral-like for the daughter of the bride??

Is it going to be an evening formal wedding? If it is then that would be fine I think. If it isn't then I think there might be other problems besides the color.

The Wedding Reception starts at 5 and goes on until midnight. But the ceremony is being held in a catholic church. Being atheist I don't really want to go to the ceremony but it's my mum..... I have to. The front of the dress is shorter than the back and the front part is to be about two inches above my knees and the back will be mid-calf.

I would ask your mom how she feels about it. The biggest problem I see is that other guests may think you have some objection to the wedding. My brother is also getting married on May 12th and I'm going to wear steel gray - it might be a better choice for you too Smiley

maybe make it black lace OVER red fabric, so there are shots of color. i wore a black dress to a january wedding with a bright pink cardigan and patterned nylons - perfectly acceptable by all accounts, although i was worried.

It depends on your mom's color choices and whether or not the wedding is a black tie/formal affair. If it is, go for it!  If not, the dress would be beautiful and appropiate in a dark brown or grey choice.  Hope this helps.

Tahnks to everyone for your help! I do think that the black lace over red fabric would be very pretty-ful.

I was also going to suggest grey as an alternative. Or beige with black lace. That would look nice too.

I love the design, but I would definitely check with your mom.

Alternatively, if you left the accents some other color besides black, then I see no objections.  How would you feel about a silvery grey instead of black lace?

Hmmm..... that would actually look really really nice. Silver and beige are the color scheme my mum is having at her wedding so it'll actually work.

Beautiful dress design, and it would look lovely with silver.  Smiley

If it's a conservative church, though, they might get a little weird about the sleeveless/strapless thing.  You might want to have a little shrug or wrap just in case.

That dress looks amazing! I was going to say that I think the dress would look awesome in a really deep brown with a taupe/beige underlay or maybe a contrasting color but red or silver as an underlay would look really nice and would be more fitting to your original idea Smiley

If it's a black tie wedding, I guess it would be okay. But it seems to make a statement you don't really want to make. At least I hope you don't want to make.  as to it being in a Catholic church, I'm sure you won't burst into flames, so what does it matter if you walk inside just to show your respect?  I don't see why you have to go in protest, its disrespectful to your mother, and I hope your dress wont do the same.

Maybe it's a regional thing, but I really don't see a problem with a black dress.   My friend got married (in a church) last year and all the bridesmaids wore black dresses with sage green sashes.

I think the design you chose is going to look beautiful no matter what color you decide on.

i LOVE the design.  LOVE it!

and yea, black to a wedding was never a no no here... maybe just check with her... but it should be fine, especially a dress as beautiful as that drawing.

You really need to ask your mother. Its her wedding and she's the only one that can tell you whether its ok or not.

i dont think you should go all black.

i like the silver ideas but i have one thing to say about that - by your icon pic you look very pale - but you also seem to(?) have dark hair so silver will either work cuz of your hair or wash you out becasue of your complection (pale blond - knows from experience)

what if you did like a deep violet or really dark blue - like cerulean but almost black? black isnt all that bad though. you can always wear something more plain to the actual ceremory and your awesome dress to the reception - i work benquets and see it all the time, hell sometime the bride even changes out of her gown!!

I love it..but one thing is its superstition not to wear black to wedding because its considered to be wishing bad luck on the couple.

Lol, I wish I could say that I designed it myself completely but actually I thought of it after watching the video Helena by My Chemical Romance. My version won't be to the floor like the dancer's is though. It will be much shorter.

My skin isn't really that pale (I WISH IT WAS!!!) But I am quite fair. My hair though, is that dark. and yeah, Iwas worried about the whole looking washed out thing

Just for the record, I was suggesting a black dress with silver accents.  I thought it would still have the formality of a black dress and the lack of color you said you liked, but without the severity and mourning aspect of an all black dress.

I think the idea is beautiful but also that if you made the red parts black it might be a little much. Whay not a dark navy or something. I dunno, just a thought. Hard to give advice when I don't know your personality!

I hope the red in the dress is scarlet.  I mean, as long as you are stomping on catholic traditions, you might as well do it right.
