Hi everyone.. I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I was recently gifted a handknit hat with this lovely stitch pattern:

hope it's clear enough from the picture. Anyway I have a burning desire to know what stitch this is, cos I'd like to use it.  Smiley Problem is that my boyfriend's Italian granny knit it for me and I can't ask her how to do it cos she doesn't speak English.

This is driving me nuts! I guess I'll go down to the library and try to pore over the stitch dictionaries if this doesn't look familiar to anyone..  Sad So does this look like something anyone's seen before?

I'll give it a go and I hope lots of others reply so I can see what the ACTUAL answer is! ha ha ha.
It doesn't appear to have any right side purls but I seems that some of the the knit stitches are raised so is it a k1 sl1 and then on the next row k2 *sl1 K1* kind of thing?

My first thought was seed/moss stitch, but yeah, there's no purls. Maybe it's k1, k1B on the right side and purls across the back? Experiment and see what you get.

I have no idea what it is, but it is certainly neat!

lt could be  "Half Brioche Stitch" or a variation

as shown in this pattern

or

Jints you're absolutely right! yay!!! thankyouthankyouthankyou  Cheesy

it does kinda look like moss/seed stitch doesn't it? but it's prettier (imo) and easier to do too! (no need for all that K1P1 pain)
