hey all!
i did this project for cutting edge a few months back.  they told me they wanted a japanese themed design on this nylon covered lantern and then let me sew away! there are some great shots of it in the magazine (and some even greater shots of my hands in the how-to section) but i wanted to share it with you guys too!

i'd love to hear about anyone undertaking this project and i''d love, love, love to see the final results!  if you do want to stitch this and have any questions, please feel free to pm me!

hearts,
erika

i have some of these in my room, except they're just plain and not embroidered.. but I lack skill in that department, haha.

But yes, it's absolutely beautiful.

I am curious as to where you could find one covered in nylon like that one. I have only seen paper... I am certain I would tear one of the paper ones to shreads trying to sew into it. Smiley

hi! thanks!!!

kittykill - the stitching wasn't all that dificult since i intentionally picked very easy stitches that, with the exception of the french knots, could be worked from the front of the project.  but i will admit that the lamp was a difficult and awkward canvas on which to work.  after a little while it does get easier to handle.  the most time consuming part is that you can't travel any stitches since once there's a light in the lantern the traveled floss will be seen.  so difficult, not really. . . time consuming and slightly awkward, yes.

linzo - the magazine gave me the lantern to work on.  i think they got it at pearl river mart here in new york but you might be able to find something online with a google search.  maybe "fabric asian lantern" or something like that. . . they might have a source directory in the magazine.

Lovely! Did you find that the fabric frayed or stretched at all as you embroidered it? I keep picturing nylon going all stringy when holes are introduced.
