I guess the most obvious idea is just to use them as holders - place them around your workspace, or wherever, for pencils, pens, knitting needles, crochet hooks, buttons, corks, what-have-you. You could also personalize them and stuff goodies in them for when you need a quick gift for a holiday or when you go to visit someone.

Coffee mugs are great for giving gifts and making candles.  But if you want to smash things you could always break them and do a mosaic.

If it's a round enough(or enough of a circle) for the handle, you could try taking off the handle and sanding down the rough edges to make bracelets.

make decorative labels to cover the logos and plant small flowers in them to give as gifts. i did this with my dad's extra coffee mugs and they were a huge hit!

I saw a very cool mosaic outside wall in a magazine once. They took teacups/coffe cups and inserted them into the wall as mini built in planters.Or maybe they cut them in half with tile snippers? Don't remember now. But very nice.

Desserts in a mug as gifts is always a great gift.  They are really good too.  There are loads at: www.budget101.com

I saw pin cushions made out of coffee mugs.  The mug was filled with stuffing and then a piece of fabric over that, it might be handy to have a pin cushion with a handle....but, personally, I would smash them up and make a mosaic!! Grin
