My Purple and Yellow Quilt is finally finished!!!
«
on:
February 23, 2007 02:30:57 PM »
Must tell the story behind this quilt before I post pictures.
About the time I joined Craftster in January, 2006, I decided I wanted to make a queen sized quilt for our bedroom. Being that it's purple and yellow/gold, I decided that the quilt had to be those colors also. I wasn't sure how I was ever going to pay for this since I was sure it would take lots of funds. I knew what pattern I wanted to use so it was just a matter of deciding on fabric. Well, it wasn't long after starting on Craftster that I discovered swapping and fabric swapping at that! I had quite a bit of fabric I had inherited from my aunt and decided that I was going to swap it to get the fabric for my quilt. So the process began. I joined fabric swaps and soon discovered ongoing swaps and made collecting yellow and purple fabric my 'obsession.' It was funny but word seemed to spread that I was looking for these colors because soon people started to PM me and offer purple and yellow fabric that they had and I noticed more and more of these colors showing up in the fabric swaps
I had a blast over about 5 months collecting my fabric and I'm happy to say that I have a very international quilt!
In the end, I used 21 different yellows and 23 different purples.
I decided that I would save all the names of people who had sent me fabric and I want to say a HUGE thanks to:
heroinechic qazicat lamamarco
fadeawaydream kaesea mata
simplyfussfree sunshyndzyne sonjaboo
ilovepaper sewcrafty superstitch
Now, on to the pictures!
This is the quilt pieced together and laying on my living room floor just before I started pinning it:
A close-up of one corner so you can see more detail:
The sewing process - not an easy thing on a regular sewing machine! and not easy taking a picture of myself sitting in the chair!
and, finally, on my bed (the colors are more true in the top photo - today was bright and sunny and it washed the color out some)
This is the first queen sized quilt I have ever made and will probably be the last - I think I'll stick to baby sized ones but I'm sure glad I did make this one

If you look at the picture on the first page, you can get a better idea. I rolled up one side and then draped the other side over the table and a chair (that you can't see.) I held lots of it on my lap and slowly worked my way through. It wasn't the easiest thing to do, but it's do-able!

It is possible especially if you roll the side you aren't quilting up tight - that way it will fit through the machine. All the best with it!

This is lovely.
I really
really
commend you on such a good use of colour.
I feel that violet/yellow is the hardest of the complementary schemes to pull off.

Thanks! You wouldn't believe the strange looks I received from people when I told them I was working on a purple and yellow quilt but, once they saw the original or pictures, they liked it.

Thanks for all the compliments!
Once I finished this quilt, I thought I was done with specific colored ones but now I'm trying to gather orange (not too girly) fabric for a quilt for my son. So far I have 10 different kinds, all collected from Craftster members!

I'm very impressed with the points of your pinwheels. Whenever I try to make them I end up sewing too far over so that the points are buried in the seams. Well done! And the purple and yellow go beautifully together too.

Thanks! Practise makes perfect and that's what I've had to do over the years. Plus, ripping out seams I wasn't happy with and redoing them

I don't know if anyone cares about this or not but I wanted to share anyway! I washed this for the first time (it's only used as a bed spread so it wasn't actually dirty but I thought it might be dusty) and I like it even better now! The washing and drying gave it a more used look and that makes it way nicer.

I love not only your quilt, but your method of collecting fabric! Craftster is such a cool place --
It is a cool place! I've also collected fabric in this manner for an orange quilt for my oldest son (seen
HERE
) and a green one for my younest son that I'm still working on.

Not sure why I didn't see this quilt earlier, but it is a beaut!! I admire your tenacity in collecting all that fabric - every piece tells a story.
