Hey! You beat me to this one! lol I purchased two really nice silk skirts with great patterns at the thrift store (I'm a thrift store junkie) with the intention of turning them into smock tops.  I wasn't quite sure how I wanted to do the top part, but I looove your idea!  I also thought about using a plain band at the top with straps, and I think it would not require a zipper, but I'm not sure.  Anyway, yours looks really, really nice!

How does it close - Did you use a zipper, hook & eye?  I'm too scared to ruin nice fabric with a bad zipper-job, but this is so nice I might have to give it a try with a stretchy material for the top part.

Mine doesn't "close," because it doesn't "open." I cut it to fit close to the body, and the fabric is non-stretchy. So it's a pull-over. I kept the yoke very short so that it would be able to lay smoothly on my shoulders/back/top of my chest, and then the extra free-flowing fabric below that gives me room for movement.

Yup yup!  Looking at the material I could tell it wasn't stretch, but I'm amazed you can just pull it on over your head.  I'd be afraid to rip a seam or something when I pulled it on.  Good to know that that can work.
