Hey ya'll.  I'm a beginner as far as sewing goes..and I'm considering on how to begin.  Any suggestions?  Such as what kind of pattern to start off with for a beginner?  Perhaps one that I could easily alter, or add things too?  I do several fashion sketches, and I'm very passionate about them, I've just yet to learn how to make my 2D creations, into 3D.  Any suggestions would be most kind and considerate.  Thanks!

Yay, welcome to the sewing world!  Starter patterns aren't too terribly hard to come by, go to your local fabric store and look through the pattern books.  Simplicity and all them generally have some patterns designated as super-easy.  They tend to be pretty basic, so they make pretty good blank canvases for creative alterations Smiley

Another idea would also be to fish around on the "discussion and questions" board.  Sometimes reading questions that other people are asking can give you some answers to questions you didn't know you had yet!

PS~I love your signature.  Best movie ever.

hey guys...well I always hated looking like everyone else and customized my clothes...i always painted, spray painted added buttons, patches, and alot of random things to my clothes to make them well, more me-like. But I always wanted to be able to make my own clothes/bags/accessories. What would you guys suggest as a good beginners project?

The Jordy tote bag is pretty easy; that was my first bag. (Go look in the bag section.) I also just made a zipper pouch which was easier than I expected.

Is this the kind of advice you wanted?

hemp necklaces are REALLY easy to make. There's only like two standard knots - the half knot and the square knot and that's basically how you do the whole thing.

Simplicity 4535 is really easy - view C I've made before - that's if you sew though.

Otherwise, there's duct tape purses, card bags, and stuff like that on craftster. I think it's pretty easy.

And ohmystars.net has tutorials on how to reconstruct clothes without really sewing.

oh ok. Then Circle skirts are an easy start. Theres a tutorial on craftster somewhere on how to cut out the stuff.
There's a simplicity pattern around here somewhere which was my first project ever and it only took 30 minutes to make. Ill have to figure out which one that was tho.
