I know you beaders must have come up with solution for this:
I bought my first spool 28 gauge 40 yards. I am crocheting with it. But upon opening it this is what happens: It starts unwinding itself and gets all tangled up and just keeps going like a slinky, I put tape at first, then tryed this and that..finally wrapped the whole thing around a piece of cardboard so I could work with it they way I need to. Was wondering if you all came up with better way to control the spool.

Put it in a plastic bag.
With the end of the wire, poke a hole in the bag.
Feed the wire through the hole in the bag.
Crochet.

Alternately, put it in a plastic container that fits as tightly as possible the diameter of the coil.  Make a hole in the cover and thread the wire through. Crochet.

It shouldn't be doing that, though, if it is on the spool correctly.  Is it craft wire or silver/gold?  When you buy precious it is spooled on a threadlike spool so that it doesn't spring apart.  I can even tell them which way I want it to come off the spool depending if I am using it on my right or left.

One of those tricks should help you out.

Thank-you funkyjunkdesigns. I just tryed the small bag trick with some 32 gauge on spool and so far it is working out great, I used to have some film containers around, back when I used film. The small container idea is great one I will keep my eye out for thoes. And yes the wire is silver/gold craft wire 26 or 28 gauge on spool. Like a spool of thread. Thanks again
