I'd rip as well, even though it's heart breaking. Any maneuvering you do to get it to fit could go haywire, or just not look right. 
Yeah, more and more I'm thinking this is the case.  I REALLY hate to pick out seams, but I guess it will be worth it for the look I wanted in the first place.

The good news is that I know I'll have enough yarn, since I'll be knitting a smaller size!  That, and I won't have any ends to join (hooray for spit splicing!).
