The pattern calls for "Wraphia Brand Raffia" which is actually rayon, not palm raffia.  Still, I wouldn't want to knit with it.  It is a cute bag, though!

Mistake?  No... it's an Unexpected Design Element.  I put it there on purpose.  *ahem*

I found that it wasn't too bad on the hands. I mean, it wasn't like silk or anything, but not like steel wool either.
And it's the sturdiest bag I own. 3 years later and it's still like new!
