Jewelry Pouch-- WITH TUTORIAL!!
«
on:
October 16, 2004 10:22:35 PM »
Hi all!
I just finished up this great little project and, since I haven't seen anything like it here, I thought I'd post a little tutorial
Jewelry Pouch:
Description: a smallish circular pouch. The inside has one large main pocket, with six smaller pockets surrounding the edges.
Materials Needed:
Small amount of two fabrics; exterior-durable fabric (EXT), interior-silky fabric (INT)
(I used less than 1yard total)
Cord for the drawstring
Matching thread (or contrasting, whatever floats your boat)
Step 1: Cut your fabric: I used a plate and a bowl as guides making my circles 7in/11in in diameter. I also made a paper bag pattern. You'll need four circles, a large and a small of each fabric.
Step 2: Take EXT. Imagine a line going directly across the circle (like the equator). At either end of that line mark 1.5 inches in from the end. This is where you will put two button holes. For the sake of space I will not post a photo of my button hole practicing. But I do suggest that you practice on a scrap piece of fabric.
***Button Hole Notes*** They should be sewn parallel to the edge of the fabric. They will eventually serve as the exit holes for the drawstring.
Step 3: Pin both pairs of circles together, large to large, small to small-- both, face to face. Sew around each of these pairs, leaving an opening for turning them right side out. Turn both, iron edges flat, if necessary. Hand sew the openings closed using an invisible stitch.
Step 4: Take Large circle and sew a casing for the draw cord. Basically you want two seams, about 3/4inch apart going all the way around the piece and on either side of the button holes.
Step 5: Center small circle on the INT of large circle. Pin INT sides together. You're going to sew the two circles together AND create the six small compartments. In the syle of cutting a pizza, start at one point along the smaller circle and sew directly across. Then sew a seam perpendicular to the first. A third seam will go kitty corner across. ALL intersect in the center of the circle. (not all compartments will be the same size) Measure up about 1.5 inches from the center and sew a circle surrounding the center intersection.
Step 6: Thread the drawstring. I've used the double string technique. Thread through one cord-entering and exiting the same button hole. Then thread a second cord- entering and exiting the OTHER button hole. Pull the cords so that the pouch closes up slightly. Then tie the cords. This will keep the pouch from opening up all the way, and will prevent the cords from sliding back inside the casing.
Step 7: Embelish the cord ends with beads or whatnot. (i've yet to find the right beads)
here it is opened up:
I hope that was clear enough... Post your pics if you make one, I'd love to see them!

Wow, that is really pretty. I especially like the color choice. And the ribbon is cool. I don't know if you are having any problem with the ribbon unraveling, but if you do, I have a few suggestions. Such as: burn the end, rap clear tape around it, use clear nail polish, super glue, hot glue, or really any glue. You could try putting a large bead on the end and then glueing it into place and cutting off the remnant on the bottom... but I do think that you did do a very good job.

Thanks!
Kitty, I did dip the ends of the cords in hot glue. They seem to be holding well so far. I wasn't totally happy with the cord I used and will probably use a thinner one next time.
Sushi, I can't wait to see how yours turns out!

I think the best way to do is is to pin a safety pin to the end of the string. The pin is much easier to hold on to as you guide it through the casing.
