Freezer paper - the same as wax paper?

So I've been reading through threads about freezer paper and I know that I won't be able to get it here (Ireland) without ordering online which I don't want to do. I read in one thread that freezer paper was just wax paper, only with wax on ONE side. So, if I got some wax paper and stuck regular paper on one side, then cut out my stencil and blah blah blah would it be the same thing? I'm desperate to try stencilling and I want to get my first try looking good.. hence using the freezer paper.

Edit: I also have one more question. Is there any alternative to spray adhesive? Like any glue you can paint on?

Where I live (Norway) freezerpaper is not available.
However, most butchers and fish-shops use it to wrap the meat/fish.
I simply asked to buy some at the meatsection at my supermarket, and they gave it to me for free

Maybe you could check if that is a possibilty in Ireland too?

You might be able to do that, I would just be careful of getting wax melted onto your iron, and then having to clean that off. 

You could also use cardstock and spray adhesive instead.  Some people even use gluesticks instead of spay adhesive.

So the next question is:
my grocery store sells giant rolls of butcher paper. It says "poly-coated brown paper" on the box. Is this freezer paper? The brand is Freezer King.

If you go to a craft store, the type that sells quilting supplies, they'll probably have it there.
We don't have freezer-paper in New Zealand, but I found some at a craft store.

just for info.. i have found that ironing a used dryer/fabric softener sheet works wonders (!!!!!) to remove iron on adhesive and wax paper residue from my iron!, no scrubbing or touching the iron, i simply put the dryer sheet on a paper towl then iron away until its clean

I wasnt able to find freezer paper to i use clear contact paper! It comes out really crisp and professional looking, and you dont even have to iron it.

yes hathaldir- that is freezer pzper- it is usually white in the states, but many butcher's prefer the brown as it is a bit sturdier.

I know this is realllly old now, but I am also in New Zealand, and i made my own version of freezer paper using a tute from instructables.  http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-your-own-freezer-paper./  I used a quite heavy shopping bag(like a black rubbish bag) and regular printer paper.  i hope this helps, if anyone still reads this thread
