Yes I used a pattern. I got the kwik sew Sewing for Baby. 
It's not actually the 2nd thing...
It's the 2nd piece of clothing i've sewn. 
Unless you count a top I tried to make when I was 12 that went into the trash.  That was a disaster.

I have only sewn a few pillows in Home Ec in Middle school.  And I made a valance for a window.  But thats was a long time ago.

I didn't make the headband.  bought it from walmart.  I did make the bow.  I have been making a lot of bows & hair clips for her.
