I did these coasters for round 2 of the owl swap, and just thought I'd share.  Tell me what you think!

They're made from 4in x 4in marble tiles I picked up at home depot.  I did acrylic gel medium transfers using images copied out of Dover's Birds of Prey coloring book(http://store.doverpublications.com/0486259897.html), then coated the tiles with Varathane polyurathane wood sealant.  I had a lot of trouble with bubbles in the sealant, unfortunately, but you can't see them in these pictures.  Finally, I glued cork onto the backs!

From left to right:  Great Horned Owl, Elf Owl, African Wood Owl

Credit goes to my swap partner, Ambraqi, for the photos.   Smiley

These look GREAT!!

Kinda reminds me of scrimshaw from Alaska/Canada.  Kinda makes me homesick too - I lived in Alaska for 4 1/2 years.

*sigh*

Good job!

These were so awesome, I had to make some myself.  I made a set for each of my sisters.  Thanks so much for the great idea.

I can't post pics yet, but here are the links:

That's a really cool idea - is the slight unevenness around the edges from the sealant, or the texture of the tiles?

It is from the tiles.  They are tumbled marble which gives it that rough side texture.

very cool and vinds yours were really sharp-looking too!

incuash, i found this page with step-by-step pics of gel medium transfers: http://www.calsk8.com/zeitgeist/stepbystep.htm. there is a link at the very bottom to his page that lists out the instructions. it looks easy and pretty fun, and as we see here the results are great!

Wow, that would be a great gift idea--those stone coasters you buy in the stores are so expensive!

Are the plain marble tiles expensive?
