i'm sure there's been a few of this posted, but i just designed my own and i'm super happy with it (ps: the giant E is for erin, which is my friend's name. it's her 21st next week, so she's getting this and a full forty as a present)

size 10 (american) double pointed needles (4)
cast on 36 stitches evenly
kk, pp for six rows
k for 14 rows (creating the stockinette stitch)
kk, pp for six more rows.  bind off.

other designs i'm going to be putting on future ones are going to be XXX (remember the moonshine bottles from cartoons?)  skulls, various names, and of course "my 40"

Very cute.  I was thinking about making a Nalgene bottle cozy along similar lines.
