mommy's overalls into baby's pixie costume

i normally don't sew (i'm terribly intimidated by the machine) but this is one project that i'm pretty proud of. i have an old pair of brown cotton velvet overalls that my mother-in-law is going to help me reconstruct. i plan to use the bib section as the top of a dress,  but until recently, the legs were just tossed in the scrap pile.
one night, on a whim, i made an outfit for my daughter lily.

i sewed one leg into a triangle for a little hat. i simply used the existing hem and trimmed it out with some pre-sewn ruffle edging.
the top is made from a pocket detail on one of the legs. i just hemmed a simple rectangle with the pocket centered on the front and used more ruffle for the straps.
for the skirt i used a strip of the velvet and sewed in elastic. i sewed a layer of the ruffle and a rectangle of pink muslin from the scrap pile. then i just hemmed the bottom edge.
the fab thing about baby clothes is that you use hardly any fabric at all - it's a great way to use up scraps.

the photos of lily in her pixie outfit are from september, when she was 4 months old. it was the only time she wore the outfit because she was growing so fast then.  i may have to make another when she gets older

i really wish i could sew better, and i keep trying to practice at it, but i really am intimidated by the machine
a couple of times when i've tried working on stuff i've broken my mother-in-law's needles, and i have this uncanny knack for snarling up the bobbin thread.
i have nothing but the utmost respect for people that can sew

when i finished it i kept looking at it with this bewildered expression. kind of like "wow. i made this. I made this. i made this!"
