So I got this weird and wonderful totally 70s acrylic sweater at a thrift shop for $3. Loved it instantly because it's totally illogical -- why are beatnicks in striped turtlenecks on bicycles waving at row houses and helicopters?

I couldn't wait to wear it around town.

Too bad it was a Mens XL and way too big on me.

So I decided to remodel it a bit to make it fit properly.

I wound up taking in the sides, changing the neckline to a "V" neck and lopping off the sleeves to make it from a sweater into a short sleeve top.

Pouf! An hour and a half later it was done. And it doesn't look like it belongs on someones Grandpa anymore...LOL

That sweater was a great find! This project is exactly the reason I want to learn to sew... and get a sewing machine. Smiley  Any chance of an action shot?

I am in loooove with sweater revamps right now.  This is as cold as I can remember here in California, and I am such a fan of finding ridiculous motifed sweaters and making something else out of them! I really like what you did.

i LOVE that sweater. so jealous. i haven't actually gotten around to all the sweater revamps i'm planning, but i have a question- is it tricky to prevent them from unraveling? i assume you just hem them and all...but i'm slightly nervous that i'll destroy the sweater in the process.

Since this sweater is acrylic it really didn't unravel at all while I was working on it. It's been through the wash a few times since and so far so good. Smiley

Here it is -- crappy photo quality (sorry!) but you can get a general idea of how it looks.

I made one more alteration this morning and removed the band at the bottom of the sweater.
