Just for you guys, I'll share a little secret.   Cheesy

Many photos produced by the U.S. government are available in the public domain.  There are several photo libraries on the web that put these photos out there for you to use in pretty much any way you want.  There are usually some caveats, mainly that you can't imply the government endorses your use of the photo, especially in a commercial product, and you don't get to use the government agency's logo nor the website artwork, just the photos themselves.  Some sites do ask for credit, though I think that applies more to magazines than something like an ATC. You could always make a note on the back of the card if you want.

http://www.usda.gov/oc/photo/opclibra.htm -- Good for farms, farmers, crops, animals, etc.

http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/graphics/photos/ -- More USDA photos, but these are staged shots rather than candids. Good scientist photos!

http://www.photolib.noaa.gov/ -- Oceans, fish, ships, storms, etc.

http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/highlights/ -- All kinds of cool spaceships, astronauts, planets, etc.

http://www.archives.gov/research/tools/ -- This is the site for the National Archives.  You can do a keyword search of the catalog for old photos, documents and illustrations.  This site takes more effort to search, and not everything is public domain because they've collected archival photos from a bunch of different sources.  But sometimes you get lucky.

Cool sites, but I poked around and each one does display copyright language of some sort.  Sad
