Yarnhag, it's illegal to melt down pennies and nickels for the metal, and it's illegal to deface coinage and then try to pass it off as legal tender...but as far as just defacing the coins and using them for art, it's legal!

LOL! i totally looked it up after my husband said it was cool but wasn't i committing a crime? but bubba*tink is right! according to the law, the only time defacing legal tender is illegal is if it is for the purpose of some fraudulent act; say i take a penny and make it look like a nickel (how, i have no idea) then that's illegal. but again, the fab bubba*tink is correct, using it for art is perfectly legal

Pennies made after 1982 (or 3?) are mostly zinc, not copper. They do have a copper coating, but... okay, that's the extent of my knowledge. Sorry.

I LOVE the necklace. It looks kind of Egypt-y... or Greek-ish? sort of. Or like something you'd find in an old tomb. Anyway, it's gorgeous and I'll definitely have to check out your Etsy!

How did you drill the holes? I've been trying to drill holes in dice (plastic) and other things and it's so difficult... I'd love to learn how to drill holes in coins..

It can't be illegal.  Every tourist spot in the USA has one of those flatten-the-penny-and-imprint-a-logo machines. 

This necklace is terrific!  I love Mr. Lincoln and the penny.  I'll be so sad if they ever retire pennies.
