I just saw this on the Ugly Betty website and thought how perfect for us!...
http://www.abcuglybettycontest.com/
Thinking we could do a lot better than Project Runway contestants did last season.

*****
Have you got the skills to design a fabulous couture dress? Do you have the creativity to blow past obstacles? Here's your chance to prove it! Create a dress that will appear in an episode of ABC's Golden Globe-nominated series Ugly Betty!

Here's the deal: Christina, Mode magazine's resident keeper of "the closet," is commissioned by a prominent celebrity to design a dress to be worn at a formal public event-- but she's snowed in at the office! With twelve hours to execute her design and no fabric to work with, Christina is forced to the use everyday office supplies to make her creation.

That's where you come in. Help Christina make the formal dress!

Submit drawing(s) or sketch(es) of your Design, showing both the back and front of the garment, along with instructions on how to construct it (i.e. materials used, shape, form and color) only using office supplies such as tape, bubble wrap, shopping bags, calendars, shoe boxes, hole punchers, paper clips or newspaper, just to name a few. Also, submit an original Essay in 100 words or less, discussing the underlying concept for the Design.

A dress based on the winning design will appear in an upcoming episode of the show! The winning "designer" will receive a trip for two (2) to Los Angeles, CA for the taping of the Ugly Betty television show scheduled to take place on 02/02/2007, where a dress based upon the winner's Design will be incorporated in the Show.

What are you waiting for?

It's time to REALLY make it work!

Click here for the Official Rules & Grant of Rights for a full list of acceptable design materials, additional submission guidelines, rights granted, eligibility conditions and prize restrictions.

I would like to enter, but if I had won (which is a million to one chance for me) I wouldn't be able to go as I don't care for travelling in airplanes. Cry Oh well.....

Perhaps this is not an option for you, but could you enter it under your mom's name? And then if you happened to win, you could be her guest?

Just a thought if you really want to do it...

I just spotted this, too. This one is made for craftsters! I would enter if I knew how to work with those materials. Anyway, I will already be living in L.A so it's not much of a prize for me  Undecided

Gah, I have a great plan.
I asked my mom if she do that.
She said "It wouldn't be honest"

this totally inspired me, I just sent in my entry.  thanks for sharing this here I have friends that watch this show, but I've never seen it (maybe I shouldn't admit that? lol

I love how I can sit and not come up with an idea to make for myself for days, but then some crazy arse 'competition' comes up and the ideas start pouring into my mind.  I'm not the best artist on earth, but I think my drawing turned out cute Cheesy

Good luck to everyone that decides to play Smiley

I'm totally doing this too!  Weberly emailed me the link yesterday, and I am on it, spent a bit of last night playing with some of the materials to make sure I have the right dimensions for everything.  I wish we could send pics, but alas, I read all the rules.  I'm hoping to send in my entry in the next few days!
A free trip to LA would be fun, too!

I like the fact that they just want a great idea, but you don't actually have to be able to MAKE the gown!  As long as you can create and explain the idea, and draw a good pic, your'e in!
Man, I hope a Craftster wins this one!  Good luck to all!

P.S.  Everyone save their images, and we can post our ideas in this thread (after the Feb. 1st deadline, of course)  I don't think the actual winner can do so (since their entry, when chosen, becomes intellectual property of ABC), but the rest of us can!

Is anyone else a bit disappointed by the limited supply list?  I immediately had ideas about this dress, and most of my wanted supplies ARE on the list, but there are a few other, STANDARD office supplies that I want to use, but they are NOT on the list.  It's highly annoying, cause I don't want to get disqualified for using extra stuff, but I think I can do better than what they have given us.  Am I alone on this one?
P.S.  Their list says this:

You may use ONLY one or more of the following materials:

Sticky (adhesive) notes
Mailing envelopes
Bubble wrap
Newspaper
Shipping forms
Lampshades
Paper
Garbage bags
Plastic water bottles
Paper clips
Fabric swatches (i.e., samples)
Shopping bags
Invisible tape
Calendars
Plastic clothes hangers
Catalogues
Plastic garment covers
Thumb-tacks
Hole puncher
Light bulbs
Shoe boxes
Tissues
Pattern paper
Shoe inner soles

You can use scissors to create it, but it doesn't say they can be used as a supply.... I'm sure they are fine.

That's a hard choice, I'm sticking with the list for my primary design, but mentioning a few other items (that are totally legit office supplies, but they left off the list for some reason) that could be used as well.  I'd just go with black and white bags, since those are the most common.

I'm not doing measurements or anything, but I am showing where 'seams' would be...not too detailed on the diagram side, but I am writing out clear directions and almost a pattern for assembling it.  Hope that helps.

Anyone who is doing this should save their sketches and we can share them after the deadline!

So you guys are going to incorporate the use of scissors into your directions?  I'm flabbergasted that scissors and staplers aren't on the list.

Yes, I think the USE of scissors is totally legit.  As are staplers.  I wouldn't use them as a MATERIAL though (like a skirt made of pairs of scissors).  I hope that makes sense.  Smiley
