So at the moment I've got this thing about librarians. I don't know what it is. Well actually I do - I've been thinking about stereotypical images of librarians, especially British ones. I then wrote a short story about a (female, British) librarian who goes crazy, which my grandfather then followed up with his OWN story about a (male, Polish) librarian who goes crazy. Hahahahahahaha (this story is hilarious, you wouldn't know. Sorry. Inside joke.)

I made this dress from a pattern (can't remember which unfortunately) and the only modification I made was to make it 7 inches shorter than the shortest length. The fabric is a wool blend and woven in Prince of Wales check. Personally I LOVE the dress, I've been wanting to make a pinafore dress ever since I tried one on in H&M and the cut was so awful and fabric SO itchy that I vowed to make my own. And hence, the librarian dress was born.

Do let me know what you think.

Thats adorable I love it! I have been seeing that style everywhere. You should pick yourself up a librarian action figure they sell them at the library I go to they are pretty funny.

Thank you for all your compliments  Smiley

Yes I think so. (Wow, well spotted!) I only paid £2.50 for mine (instead of £10) because I ordered through school.

I'm jealous!! That looks like a dress i saw that fit and felt horrible, too!  You did an awesome job on yours!  Where did you find the fabric?

Thank you! The fabric is just from a local fabric shop, it was in the 'suiting' section.

!!! Sounds hilarious! Where can I get one of these from??

I remembered the other alteration I did - I cut the front bodice piece on the bias so that the square pattern turned the other way round. (as you can clearly see.) I also omitted the pockets.

Irishride - and anyone else who wants it - PM me your email, and I'll send you a scan of a form to get this pattern for free!  I got it from Adorn magazine.  It's just $2.50 for S&H.

i saved money a while back by making something very much like this for my little girl out of a men's wool shirt.

It's a pretty dress.... But now I really want to read the stories!
my husband once told me a funny story about a librarian who got a little wild, and her reaction the next morning when she found her glasses and got a good look at him. just check out this photo of him, and you can use your imagination as to how long it took her to get dressed:

I think the pattern is 4097 Simplicity. I made the dress also but I used lightweight fabric and it made me look pregnant (my scared husband told me with a question in his eyes  Wink ).
It looks way better on you!!  Shocked

Thank you, thank you!

cute!!  reminds me of audrey hepburn in funny face.

*blush* I just LOVE her outfits in that film. Although I've only watched up to the bit where Fred Astaire and the Scary Editor Lady sing "Ring dem bells" at the beatnik party....You know, it (the comparison) doesn't actually seem hugely surprising after all considering my age-long facination for beatniks. *ponders*
