I've fallen in love with these cute animal hats, So i've decided I'm going to make myself a panda. If you're not sure what I mean here's some examples:

(these pics were ripped off deviant art and right here on craftster, they're not mine!)

But how cute?!  Cheesy

Anyways, I've never made a hat before, so I thought it might be nice for a group of us to have a crack at it together?

Theres a couple of tutorials floating around:

http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=139364.0
and...
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=56636.0

I've already ordered some off-white and black anti-pill fleece off ebay, but I don't think it'll be here untill end of next week. Oh well Smiley

If anyone is interested talk to me! The only animals I could think of doing apart from a panda were: a rabbit (these are cute with the long droopey ears), a cat, and well just some random characters really lol.

Anyone wanting to be more original than me and make a chicken or something is very very encouraged!!

Oh! These hats are fun! My niece and I made a bunch of these recently for a craft fair. They sold pretty well.  I wish I had gotten pics of the piggie and dinosaur ones!

Those are fantastic  Cheesy

Is making hats easy? Is it just a case of putting darts in the right place?

I love them both Smiley

I didn't use any darts.  I made them similarly to the first link you posted....except I used  4 panels instead of only 3. I sewed two sets of 2 panels together, then basted the ears onto one half of the hat, then sewed the other side on. easy! sometimes I make a brim, sometimes  I don't.

Is that a Kyo hat?! ^_^;;

I would love to do this, but I'm swamped with other things right now(Mom gives me a budget on fabric and such each month and I'm about to blow it on a costume and a pattern for school), but I'm going to bookmark this thread, just in case.

i'm looking to make a couple of hats like these myself but i'm hesitant to get started ^^;
i like the idea of using 4 panels...i just sort of wish i had more examples of them being made.  does anyone have any other patterns or tutorials at all?  i'm sure i could figure it out, i just don't have any "practice fabric" right now Tongue

i've done a little tinkering with some newspaper to try to come up with something but it's...coming along slowly, lol ^^;
if you could just show the shape of the peices before they're put together, then that's probably all i'd need.
thanks so much for even offering Cheesy

I have some anti-pill fleece just lying around...although all in incredible bright colors.
I could give it a shot, though. ^.^

Count me in!  I bought some Rilakkuma fabric a few months ago just for this purpose.  I want to make a Rilakkuma head-hat and have the inner part be lined with the fabric.

Rilakkuma is a Sanrio character really only seen in Japan.  Google him, he is adorable Smiley

I will post my findings along the way and let you know what I do right and wrong.  This is my first animal hat also.

ok i was finally able to make a beenie that didnt turn out looking like a yamaka. so i added some ears and this is what i came up with. its my first animal hat, so its not that great. the next one will be much better, im sure.

one of the ears is higher up than the other and i sewed them on facing the back of the hat, but its super comfortable! i think ill keep it just to wear around the house.

I'm actually working on one right now. It's a bunny ear hat that's black with a red lining. It has pockets on the bottom of the ears to keep your hands warm, and the ears are long enough to use as a scarf! Cheesy
I'll post a link to it when I finish. (should be sometime later today or tomorrow)

~edit~

here's some of the pics:

To see more, here's the thread: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=288868.0

It's comfortable, and extra warm cause of the two layers of fleece. I love it!

Cute! I really like the bunny one.
I need to make a few of these, one for me, and a couple for my boys. I'm thinking monsters.

if you don't wanna use 4 panels you can just sew two semicircles together and put the ears in the seam.

All I've got is red fleece and paper sized pieces of felt.
But I wants to make it.
