as to laundering, I so far have had no problems throwing them in the wash with my daughter's diapers.  No soaking, no scrubbing just a cold rinse and hot wash. 

as to postpartum pads, I would worry about absorbency.  Most people have at least a few days (maybe weeks) of very heavy flow, and i think it would be hard to make cloth pads absorbent enough.  For the later stages, they would be fine, no adaptation necessary. 

As to nursing pads, all of mine are just multiple layers of flannel circles (about 3in in diameter) serged together at the edge.  I bought them, but they would be very easy to make.

I was my pads same as my towels and underwear. 60 degrees celsius, no fabric softener.
