What is that made from - knit or fabric?  Could we see a picture from the top so it shows up better, please!

Both are knit. The scarf is illusion knitting - from the top, it just looks like thin black and white stripes, but when viewed at a certain angle - piano keys! It's a Christmas gift for one of my hubby's aunts who is both a music professor and a masters student.

Here's the only view from the top I took before I wrapped it (I'm kind of anal about wrapping things as soon as I have them/finish making them):

That is really cool! Is illusion knitting a common thing? I don't knit so I may be well out of the loop.

I get it now - that's so cool!  I thought it was piano keys and that's why I asked for a top view  Grin

I have a friend who knits and I only crochet, so we've been saying for awhile that we are going to teach each other our crafts. I did a little search on illusion knitting and came up with a scarf that has a batman pattern on it. Now I must learn!

Thanks, this project really inspired me to branch out!

That is a really cool scarf. I'd love like that. Was it hard to knit? Harder than say, cables?

It was SUPER easy! I'd say even easier than cables. All it uses is knit and purl stitches. It's the Counterpoint Scarf from the December '06 Magknits - just make sure you read the pattern notes - it uses a chart, but it (the chart) isn't read the same as say, a lace chart would be.

Sorry!

I'm afraid I've not been too good about making my colour projects the last few months; I really don't like orange or brown and just couldn't get inspired to make anything in those colours and the blue gloves I'm making are still not quite finished (just a few fingers left) as the first one came out too big and I had to unpick it back to the wrist and rewrite everything above the wrist in the pattern I was using, to make them fit me. Ugh!

Now I look back over the posts, I can see there have been so many amazing projects added here, since I last looked. That chair is fantastic and it looks so comfortable and such a nice shade of blue and the piano keys scarf just has me looking from one picture to another and back again to try to see how the illusion works. I'd love to have a go at making something like that. I think that the frog quilt is great too; where they are all chopped up, it seems like they are diving under the water!

I'll try to do better for November and December!

I have never knit from a chart. I like cabling - it took me a few tries  to work out and then it clicked.

Love the quilt and the chair too Smiley
