Yes, that could work! Just bind off all of one color, then all of the other, and you have an oven mitt!

I tried my hand at the pattern offered free on knittinghelp.com to learn DK. I used some kind of Moda Dea yarn I picked up at AC Moore for about $2-3/skein. My next DK project will be a scarf for a friend (who loves hearts).

I knitted this scarf early this year, but finally got around to posting. I was inspired by neekie's houndstooth chart posted earlier on the Double Knitting Knitalong and I created this:






I used Encore DK in black and white.
