I was planning to make this as a Christmas gift for my sister anyway . . . and then this came along.  I'm sure my fellow Craftsters will have something way more fabulous, but I figured I'd throw my hat in the ring.

I used a small soft football, added the handles, and then lined it with Bengals fabric. I bought the handles and then put grommets in the football and used leather cording to tie the handles on through the holes (if that makes any sense) It's a little rough around the edges but she seemed to love it.  If nothing else she'll be the only one tailgating with one!

That's a pretty clever handbag!  I've experienced the Bengals tailgates for the first time ever this year, there are definately some unique and crafted items there.  You would be suprised! I croched a scarf to wear down there and someone asked me if I bought it! I know this is the wrong board for it but here's the link if you want to look at it: http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p18/shamekko/whodey3.jpg

Just one question (it may sound a little silly), did you have problems cutting the football, as far as it popping, or did you deflate it first?

What a neat idea! I have some leftover Patriots fabric that is itching to be used...and a bunch of red cord...and some grommets...now if I can just find a football!!

How hard was it to put the zipper in?

Awesome scarf - I was tailgating Sunday, but all my handmade accessories still weren't enough to bring home a win. :-(

The football I bought was stuffed with stuffing, not a bladder - so it didn't pop.  However, I was experimenting with another one that was soft on the outside (a hard rubber one wouldn't work with my sewing machine).  That one had a bladder in it so you could carefully cut the stiching between two sections, pop the bladder and then pull it out.

As for the zipper - it wasn't easy.  I ended up sewing the zipper to the football first and then made the lining and turned the edges under adn connected the zipper to the linning.  I had issues around the sides because I couldn't get the whole thing to turn right under my machine.  I just tried to make sure it was secure and wouldn't come off.  I ended up doing a satin stich to top stich (the portions I could reach anyway) and secure the zipper.

It's hard to describe, I'm not even sure I could do it again if I wanted!

That's so cute!  If I can find a little Chiefs football like that I'll know what to do for my MIL next Christmas.  Smiley
