pattern:

it's basically an 8-row repeat, with all even rows identically.  not too hard, eh?

CO 39 stitches (use worsted weight yarn and size 8 needles, but this doesn't matter too much)
work 2 rows garter stitch
row 1: K2, P2, K9, P2, K9, P2, K9, P2, K2
row 2: K1, P1, K2, P9, K2, P9, K2, P9, K2, P1, K1
row 3: K2, P2, slip 3 to cable needle and hold in front, K3, K3 from cable needle, K3, P2, slip 3 to cable needle and hold in front, K3, K3 from cable needle, K3, P2, slip 3 to cable needle and hold in front, K3, K3 from cable needle, K3, P2, K2
row 4: (row 2)
row 5: (row 1)
row 6: (row 2)
row 7: K2, P2, K3, slip 3 to cable needle and hold in back, K3, K3 from cable needle, P2, K3, slip 3 to cable needle and hold in back, K3, K3 from cable needle, P2, K3, slip 3 to cable needle and hold in back, K3, K3 from cable needle, P2, K2
row 8: (row 2)

Repeat 1-8 until the scarf is as long as you want, finish off with fringe (or don't!)

if there are any problems with this pattern, let me know.  it's my first time ever writing one up . . . .

The scarf is beautiful.  I wish I were able to knit more than the basic stitch, but for some reason me and patterns don't get along...

don't be nervous, kneecola!  it's an easy (albeit fidgity) knit -- it's actually my first large-scale cabled project.  (I'm saying first though I did do knitty's fetching, but those are tiny and have only a half-dozen cables total, so they hardly count.)
