I just finished my longest running WIP. I designed and started knitting the first version over 3 years ago. Had to frog the whole thing after reaching the underarms, redesigned and knitted this:

This is the first full sweater I've knit that I am actually happy with. The fit is perfect (I can't bring myself to take it off even now).  What to you think? I'm loving the center paired cables especially.

Oh, detritus, this is just lovely. I have gansey in my head that still hasn't made it on to the needles ... maybe in 2007, thanks to your inspiration.

WOW. That is so intricate, and the colour is perfect too. If you don't mind me asking, did you have any resources when designing? I'm interested in aran patterns, but don't know what would be the best book or website to start with.

I used Beth Brown-Reisel's book "Knitting Ganseys." I highly recommend it, she includes 5 or 6 complete sweater patterns, but mostly focuses on giving you the information needed to design your own. Despite the complexity of gansey sweater shaping, her book lays it all out step by step so it isn't at all overwhelming like I thought it might be.

The reason this sweater took so long was just because I made some stupid mistakes (trust your gauge swatch, and block it because highly textured patterns will change a lot when they get wet) and becuase I developed tendonitis and couldn't knit at all for several months. It wasn't too difficult, but it certainly wasn't TV knitting (or bus knitting since it is all knit it one piece).

Thanks for all the compliments! I really like the color as well (it's a little more subdued in real life than how it looks on my monitor). I used Cascade Sierra (a wool/cotton blend) in 08...no fancy color names here I guess!

I love Cascade Sierra...It's what I've been thinking of for the gansey I want to make...just can't decide on a color.

Gorgeous!  You must be so proud of yourself.  I saved that book you recommended on my Amazon wish list.  Thanks for sharing!
