We have all these people that we usually give gifts to but we just bought a house and we are a bit broke.  My uncle gave me this idea and it was really easy to do and not too expensive (about $10.00 Cdn each)

Glass block presents

Tutorial:

Go to Home Depot (or similar store) and buy the largest glass drill bit they have (a half and inch and about $15.00)
Go to a store that has glass blocks (mine was a local masonry store and they were $7.00 each)
Go to a store that sells wide wire ribbon (or use some you have)
Buy a small string of white lights on a white cord that only has one plug (they are about $2.00 each)
Take stuff home
Place glass block in cold water (used a laundry tub), slowly drill a hole in the back of block to one side with the drill (and drill bit) lubricate with water so it doesn't get hot
Let block dry
Shove Christmas lights in hole letting plug dangle out
Tie on a ribbon

Voila you are done.

We didn't even break one block and we made 4 in about an hour.  It was fun being crafty with my boyfriend too.  Wink

Gorgous!

But isn't it hazardous to use an electric drill near water?

I love these for my house!!  One question, though... Are they hollow, or do you just shove the lights into the one hole?  Could you post a pic of the back??

Jesgia-They are hollow, I'll take a pic and post it as soon as I can.

Scotskipper402-We used a cordless drill and the only part that was wet was the bit.

What a cool idea. I wonder if you could put some tinfoil in there to make it more sparkle-y...

What a great gift idea!  I have always tried to get my boyfriend into crafting with me and he usually has no interest what so ever.  I never thought of doing something like that before, I usually make smaller things that don't require power tools.  I must try something like this next near!

We just made 4 more!   They are very addictive. The only trouble is finding the clear lights on white wire this close to Christmas.

My secretary bought one of these from someone selling them for 20 dollars. She brought it into our office--I think it was the nicest decoration we had this year.
Great work!!
