An urgent question for all of you: I'm making a cardigan for my grandma. Just in case it matters, I'm using bulky yarn and size 10.5s, but the resulting fabric is still very drapey and not stiff. Soon I will need to sew on Scandinavian-style pewter hook-and-eye closures to finish it.

How does one sew embellishments onto one's knitting? Should I be trying to loop the thread around the yarn in the knitted fabric, or through the yarn itself? Am I dead in the water if I don't reinforce the cardigan edges with a length of sturdy ribbon on each side? Advice, please!

with thick yarn (and just guessing here based on needle size)
you have a few choices.

1--split the yarn (if its 4 ply, take 2, if its 8 ply, take 4)
and use yarn to sew on.

2-if the yarn can't readily be split, and is too thick to sew with, go to hobby/needle work store and by some silk or cotton embroidery floss (these come in thousands of colors!) and use floss to sew on.
