***Gold square cane TUTORIAL***
«

These square canes are a favorite of mine. SUPER EASY
Translucent clay log wrapped in Gold and then Copper clay thickest setting of pasta machine. Then wrapped in black (medium thickness of pasta machine)
Log of copper clay wrapped in Gold and Translucent (thickest setting), then black (medium setting).
Large Translucent log wrapped in black (medium setting). I rolled and reduced till I had 24 inch long logs. I layed down a sheet of black (med setting) and lined up my logs in a row.
Rolled it like a jelly roll.
Cut your canes as shown.
Stack together as shown. You can decide at this point whether you want a circular or square shape cane. I say it is hip to be square.
I used my roller and squared my cane by rotating and turning (I find square canes easiest to reduce)
You could do many different things with these square canes, my first ornament was made with this cane, just finished it this evening. What do ya think?

VERY GOOD tutorial! . . . really shows the process of making a geometric cane, and how complex they can look even using fairly simple basic canes as components. Also, because you didn't wrap or otherwise separate your final cane before slicing and/or joining the slices, it even shows nicely how a
secondary
pattern can be created from the shapes on the corners or sides of the final cane which is always neat.
(Of course, a lot of the final look also depends on color choice and position, reducing well, and butting the slices together on an object or just as a sheet well, which you certainly accomplished
)
Diane B.
P.S. For those who've never made a
bullseye cane
(aka a "wrapped" cane) like these two, the main things to remember are not to
overlap
the ends of each wrap layer (the ends must be
butted
), and to create the layers
one at a time
(it's deadly hard to get all layers butted exactly if you try to shortcut and wrap a sheet of several layers around a core!**)
**though I guess
if
one were making an
indented
cane (leaf cane maybe or chrysanthemum cane, etc), or would be
cutting out
part of the cane to replace it with something else, that "chinked" area of joins might get hidden by indenting right
on
the joins, or get removed and replaced with something else so the chinks wouldn't matter.
P.P.S. If anyone is trying to see exactly where the final cane slices begin and end, note that the votive and ornament
also
use the final cane along with triangular/textured gold slices in some rows, or canes cut in half or in quarters in some rows.
Diane B.

Thanks bunches on your VERY kind compliments Kaleesi, alwaysinmyroom, naelany, sarah- and DianeB. You guys can sure make a crafter feel special. If it takes me till the rest of my life, I vow to show crafters how easy making canes are. I think I have covered every available tin, bottle, jar, now ornament around the house lol.

Wow! Stunning work! And thanks for the great tutorial- I've always been amazed by intricate looking canes and have been too chicken to try anything other than a check or spiral pattern. You made it seem entirely withing my reach to try something a little fancier! I may have to dig out the clay soon and give it a try!

I think that's incredible!!! I saw your post with the other jars last week and I couldn't imagine how you made such complicated canes. This tutorial really makes the steps straightforward -- I need visuals for things like this. I don't do any polymer clay, so I'm particularly in awe of your talents here. Thanks for sharing!!!
