So, I just finished all of my finals and I have a month off until next quarter so while I'm trying to make all my Christmas gifts for friends, I decided to make something for myself too.

for scale:

I have a lot of balsa wood and plexiglass left over from my architecture classes from last year and I've been wanting to use them so they don't remain stacked in a basket in my closet.

Here's a small tutorial, although it's all pretty easy to do.
What you need:
Balsa wood
Glue (I just used tacky glue, but most kinds should work)
Paint
Plexiglass
Small picture (from a magazine, book, a photograph, doodle or whatever)
Stiff back board (I used bristol board)
Stapler (or a small screw-in hook)

I used a Yaris ad for my picture

Thank you guys SO much!
I was really just bored (and still am - maybe I'll make a few more) and wanting to craft something.

Maybe I'll make some of these for Christmas gifts for my girl friends.  They're quick and easy (and completely free for me to make!!! yay!)

Awesome idea.  When I first looked at this post, I wasn't sure if it was going to turn out well, but you did a very nice job.  I like the Yaris commericals too.  Thanks for the tutorial.  =)

That is great. I've been running through ideas similar to this for a project I have in mind. Hope you don't mind if i borrow the concept. I do have a question though. About how thick is the wood & plexiglass you used? Also where did you get the plexiglass?

I just love the necklace! It is really gorgeous and so simple too. And to add a tutorial, that's so nice of you. But yours is just wonderful!
