Yeah, so, last night, I was knitting with my size 9, fourteen inch, plastic needles. I hold the end of my right needle under my arm when I'm using 14-inch ones, and I suppose I must've squeezed, or SOMETHING, because my needle SNAPPED.  Angry And then, maybe 20 minutes later, while I had the other one in my right hand, IT SNAPPED, TOO. D<
This has NEVER happened to me before. I didn't even know that knitting needles COULD snap. And I'm still gonna knit with them, because I don't have any other 9's, and I need to get this scarf done by Christmas.

I've had this happen to me too!

I was using an olllllld pair of plastic needles, as in, my great-grandmas plastic needles, and for some reason, halfway through a purse I was knitting, they snapped. In four places at once.  Roll Eyes

strange? yeahhh. but whatevs, they were obviously really old and apparently brittle.

good luck on that scarf!

Four places at once! Holy crap! Shocked

Mine might've been really old, too. They came from a yard sale.

Thanks! The scarf ended up coming out really well!

Could you have spilled some alcohol (like rubbing alcohol... or the other kind, I guess!) or something containing alcohol on them? Or something else with fumes that would break down the plastic? I know that contact with alcohol can make acrylic body jewelry suddenly very brittle.

Anywho, try wrapping rubber bands around the ends of your now shorter needles to make a new end stopper, and good luck!

Crap, I feel your pain.
I did it with a really nice pair of wooden needles.
I was heading out the door, and putting my knitting away at the same time (apparently not a smart thing to do...) and one of the needles caught on the door jamb and snapped. >.<
It hurt... *sniff*

I know I never got any alcohol on them, but I don't know what happened to them before they came into my possession. Thanks for telling me that alcohol can do that - I'll make sure to be careful!

That's a good idea with the rubber bands, too. I was trying to think of how to make new stoppers!

haha, thats what I was doing with my needles too! they already had the ends snapped off when I started, so I just did that rubber band thing and used them anyway. Maybe I should have taken the hint, huh?   Cheesy

I've heard of plastic crochet hooks snapping. It just happens sometimes though that doesn't stop it from sucking.

I just had my Bates circs do that Sad Broke right at the join. Thank heavens I had another pair of 8s (the pattern suggested doing sleeves on them, but I made really long DPNs so I never switched over).

Dropped a pile of stitches too. Angry

That happened to me a little while ago. I was knitting a purse for my bff for christmas, using my favorite plastic 8's, and they suddenly snapped! I was pissed! But I have a few other pairs, so I just used those...I'm still in mourning for those needles though..
